Dismantled in 2012 and rebuilt in 2013, this charming cottage began its life as a classic mid-century ranch. It's journey from ugly duckling to polished bungalow is detailed below. Pictures of the completed project follow in a slide show at the bottom of the page.
1960 Ranch in established neighborhood
With an attached 2 vehicle carport, breezeway, and partial full basement the home offered promise. In 2008 we did a minor renovation to make the house suitable as rental property.
Demolition
Looking to add a bedroom and open the floor plan, we explored several options to renovate this home. A second story addition was discussed as was working within the original footprint. In the end insects helped make up our minds. The front wall of the house had had an extensive infestation of termites at one time in the past. We decided to add an addition to the front and rear of the house and to bring the entire house down to the floor deck and rebuild with a focus on energy efficiency and a modern open floor plan.
Re-framing
Frame off renovation. Rebuilding begins.
Raising the roof . . .
With a goal toward energy efficiency, the roof is sheathed in Hunter Polyiso Panels H-Shield NB offering R value 15.90, while the exterior walls are wrapped in Dow foil lined rigid foam.
Siding and Shingles . . .
Earth tones help minimize the increase in height and size.
Finishing touches were added in 2015. We still think sitting on the front porch at the end of a day's work is the place to be!
